Harrogate is a unique, Victorian Spa Town in the heart of North Yorkshire. Sounds the perfect place to explore. But, I hear you ask! Can I take my dog?
The answer is yes of course! And they will thank you for a visit.
A trip to Harrogate can be as adventurous or as relaxing as you wish, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. With the Yorkshire Dales on your door step, you’re spoilt for choice, with an abundance of hikes to get those steps in. Or maybe a visit to Brimham Rocks , just a 20 minute drive from Harrogate and the perfect place to take the whole family (this is on my list of places to visit). Of course, like us, you can decide to take in the sights and sounds as you leisurely stroll around the charming streets of this thriving town.
Surprisingly Harrogate boasts a vast amount of lush green space and parklands. One park in particular, The Stray, as it’s known to locals, is an impressive 200 acres – surrounding the southern half of the town centre. I imagine a visit in spring would be delightful, as the cherry trees that line the pathways would be in full bloom. This place is doggy heaven! Indeed, you could take a picnic or grab a sandwich from one of the many independent cafes and enjoy it on one of the benches. If that isn’t enough, as you amble through the town, you’ll also discover Valley Gardens set in over 17 acres of English Heritage Grade II listed parkland. Dogs must be kept on lead here.
Meandering through the town of Harrogate you are greeted with the most beautiful displays of flower beds, which is no surprise after being named as a finalist in this year’s 2023 RHS Britain in Bloom UK Finals. We immersed ourselves in their interactive floral trail, where you can look for fantastic installations around the town which represents their international links with other cultures.
Whatever you decide to do we’re sure you won’t be disappointed.

The Harrogate Inn

If you are interested in extending your stay in Harrogate with your dog, then why not book an evening at The Harrogate Inn. We were very kindly invited along to see for ourselves just how wonderful it is. This popular Inn has just recently reopened after a very exciting multi-million pound refurbishment. The Harrogate Inn is part of The Inn Collection Group, a group of welcoming, dog friendly Inns dotted around some fantastic locations in the UK. Walking through the Inn we were very impressed by the grandeur of the decor and features.

The bedrooms
We stayed in a superior suite, there are a variety of rooms available at different rates. The room was so comfortable and spacious with a huge bed and separate sofa to relax on. We had the best nights sleep. Superior Double rooms are equipped with ensuite bathroom, flat screen TV and tea and coffee making facilities. Dogs are welcome and are subject to a pet supplement of £10 per dog, per night. After an evening of indulging and a great nights sleep – you can enjoy a buffet breakfast the next morning (which is included in the room rate). With the option of continental, English breakfast or both if you wish, you’ll certainly be ready for the day ahead.

The Barking George

The Inn’s onsite pub, The Barking George is magnificent with a vibrant atmosphere. Beautifully decorated throughout with lush Olive trees, grand light shades and floral upholstery; in keeping with the town’s Victorian Spa heritage! We were impressed with the variety of spaces on offer, to sit and enjoy your meal or drinks and allowing Willow and Bobby to lay down undisturbed. The staff were extremely polite and helpful, always offering the spaniels a bowl of water and a fuss.

Undoubtedly, the most impressive feature is a monumental, stained glass dome ceiling, hovering majestically over the well stocked bar.
The Food
As with all of the Inns, you can expect traditional, home cooked food. Of course, being in Harrogate, the dishes are made using the finest Yorkshire ingredients. I chose the 8oz sirloin steak, served with roast tomato and grilled garlic mushroom; along with a side of chunky chips. I couldn’t resist their signature steak sauce, which was delicious and I would definitely recommend it. Norman, my husband, chose the Venison Burger, 2 x 4oz game burgers with blue cheese and apple ketchup, in a toasted sesame seed brioche bun, served with fries. Even if you’re not staying the night we would certainly recommend a visit for a light lunch or an evening meal. Take a look at the full menu here.

We couldn’t resist one of their delicious, homemade desserts to finish. I indulged in a generous portion of Sticky Toffee Pudding – with salted caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream while Norman grazed on a huge Cheese Plate – loaded with a selection of Yorkshire and British
cheeses served with biscuits, fruits and homemade chutney. To wash all the delicious food down we sampled a variety of gins, ales and cocktails on offer and while the sun was shining, took advantage of the huge patio area with outdoor seating and parasols.

This is not the first time we have stayed at one of The Inn Collection Group pubs, Back in October 2022 we stayed at The Lindisfarne Inn and we are often visitors of The Seaton Lane Inn for family meals or drinks. Although, on this occasion our stay was complimentary, all opinions and photographs are our own. We would highly recommend a stay or visit here if you are ever in Harrogate with your pups. We will definitely be back.
